June 23rd, 2021, the 8th International Women in Engineering Day was marked all across the world. Women in engineering from all calibers of life from students to seasoned professionals all marked this day. This day was started by UK based Women’s Engineering Society (WES). It is a day that seeks to enhance the profile of women in engineering and at the same time highlight the opportunities available for young women and girls in the industry. This year, 2021 the theme was Engineering Heroes aimed at highlighting the work done by women in engineering in various industries.

To mark this day here in Kenya, Michelle Boit Foundation, BeeTheEngineer, STEM Wahandisi La Femme, IEEE Women in Engineering Kenya Chapter, and FESTO, organized an event at Kenyatta University (KU) in Kenya. The event was sponsored by all the above partner organizations and Giertsen Energy Solutions.

The Kenyatta University brought their A team to the event. The event was graced by ENG Martin Nzomo, the IEEE patron of Kenyatta University. Dr. Winfred Mutuku, chair of KU STEM Club, Prof Judith Waudo, the director CGEE and KU WEE Hub Leader.

o commemorate this day, we had three speakers from various engineering backgrounds to speak at the event.

Our First speaker was Ms. Martha Cheruto, the Asst. CEO of Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA), an apex body of the private sector in Keya. Ms. Cheruto is a Mechanical Engineer by training and a renewable energy expert.
