What/Who inspired you to pursue a career in STEM?

My love for Science subjects and my family.

Could you share a brief overview of your journey in the STEM field?

I have always loved sciences, this guided the subjects I took in high school and ultimately the electrical and electronics engineering degree I pursued for my undergraduate studies. I worked as a graduate trainee electrical engineer and I am now a professional engineer with over 6 years experience practicing in the engineering space.

How has motherhood impacted your career journey in STEM?

I have had instances where I take my children to work whenever I am on standby over the weekend so that we spend time together and they get to experience a few aspects about my career.

What are some of the challenges you have faced as a mother in the STEM industry?

A balance between my career and family when the work load is high. Getting enough time to improve my skills and to network.

What support systems or resources have helped you navigate the challenges you faced being a mother in STEM?

Family support and a reliable domestic help. Support from the workplace- colleagues and supervisors. Flexible work hours when my baby was a few months old.

In what ways can the STEM industry better support and accommodate mothers?

Through flexible work hours. Hybrid work arrangements , i.e. working from home sometime. Nurseries and lactation rooms. Supportive work culture that provides a healthy space to help navigate motherhood seamlessly. Longer maternity leave for up to 6 months to support exclusive breastfeeding.

How can we (mothers already in STEM) encourage more mothers and aspiring mothers pursue and thrive in STEM careers?

Through mentorship and striving to bring out our best so that they can see that many have done it and succeeded.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to pursue careers in STEM while also planning to become mothers?

It is achievable with the right support systems and personal drive.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience as a mother in STEM?

Always ask for help when you are overwhelmed.
