Elaine Nyakako

Which STEM field are you in?

Engineering

What/Who inspired you to pursue a career in STEM?

My aunt

Could you share a brief overview of your journey in the STEM field?

Its been a long journey that started from the craft level to the degree level. It’s not been easy especially when it comes to the industry but with patience and resilience I’ve made it to what I am today. I thank God

How has motherhood impacted your career journey in STEM?

It’s slowed me down because many times my call as a mother is far greater than my career but it’s also strengthened me to fight and achieve, not only for me but also for my children. It’s given my family members the strength (and me as an example to them) that yes women can pursue STEM and yes they can do better.

What are some of the challenges you have faced as a mother in the STEM industry?

90% of the times motherhood is more demanding but it’s all about balance. Sometimes balancing becomes challenging but so far do good.

What support systems or resources have helped you navigate the challenges you faced being a mother in STEM?

Mentors, Friends, Women STEM tech groups and Family

In what ways can the STEM industry better support and accommodate mothers?

By providing Lactating rooms in all institutions and providing daycare centers too

How can we (mothers already in STEM) encourage more mothers and aspiring mothers pursue and thrive in STEM careers?

By being mentors and not giving up. By also being positive.

What advice would you give to young women aspiring to pursue careers in STEM while also planning to become mothers?

We are making it so can you. It all starts in the mind. Positivity all the way
